Music Program

Music classes provide our students with training in choral work, one-on-one attention in singing techniques, and instruments. Music appreciation and folk dancing are also offered in the music curriculum. Students are taught to read music by learning to play the recorder in fourth grade. Band instruction begins at this level as well. For the advanced musician, the high school has a choral ensemble. Students are given many opportunities to perform in chapel and on Special Days, as well as in concerts and community service.

Instrumental Program

StoneBridge School offers opportunities for student instrumentalists to excel, both as individual musicians and as members of a larger ensemble. Classes are taught using the Principle Approach and students learn to play more than notes on a page - they learn the importance of playing from the heart and using music as a tool for ministry. The following ensembles are typically offered:

Beginning Band
This class is for students starting out on an instrument. Class meets during school hours in the band module and requires a nominal monthly fee. Students learn the basics of their instruments and basic ensemble skills. This group performs in the spring concert each year and occasionally for special events with the other groups.

Beginning Strings
This class is for students starting out on an instrument. Class meets during school hours in the band module and requires a nominal monthly fee. Students learn the basics of their instruments and basic ensemble skills. This group performs in the spring concert each year and occasionally for special events with the other groups.

Parents and students are encouraged to contact the instrumental music director Jim Edwards at jim.edwards@stonebridgeschool.com
if you are interested in participating. Mr. Edwards also offers private lessons in all band and orchestral string instruments.

Choral Program

Chorus class is part of the curriculum in the middle and high schools.  Like the instrumental program, the choral classes teach students to appreciate music as a tool in communicating God's love and goodness.  The following ensembles are typically offered:

Beginning Chorus
This class is for 6th and 7th graders and it emphasizes defining the art and practice of choral singing as applied through a uniquely Biblical perspective.  Students are trained to sing in unison and in harmony, gain the techniques to support vocal production, begin sightreading, understand basic music theory, and expand their musical repertoire through the learning of diverse music styles along with music history.  The choir performs at either the winter or spring concerts.

Advanced Chorus
This course provides opportunities for 8th-12th graders to develop their musical potential and aesthetic understanding through singing in a choral ensemble.  Students learn music theory, reading, rhythms, clefts and key signatures, solfeggio, and the building of technical skills, team spirit and responsible rehearsal habits necessary for excellence in musical worship.  Students strengthen listening skills and their ability to analyze and evaluate music and music performances. Students also relate their music experiences to personal development. This class is designed for those motivated students interested in performance.  Performance at school concerts is required.
