The College Application Process
Step 1 Figure out what colleges/universities you want to apply to for admission.
Step 2 Print out the applications for those schools, even if you plan to apply online. Review the applications for requirements. Use the College application checklist found at http://www.collegeboard.com/student/apply/the-application/8435.html to stay organized.
Step 3 Request your letters of recommendation (at least 2 weeks prior to the deadline) by using the StoneBridge form (blue) and/or college specific forms. Be sure to include a list of your activities. This form can be found in Appendix E of the College Handbook.
Step 4 Request your transcript (at least 2 weeks prior to the deadline) by using the StoneBridge form (gold). This form is to be given to the College Counselor. This form can be found in Appendix G of the College Handbook. Also include any college specific forms (often called the Secondary School Form) that must be submitted with your transcript by the school counselor.
Step 5 Write your essay(s)/personal statements for each of the applications you plan to submit.
Step 6 Submit your applications to the colleges, along with your application fee and other supporting documentation. Make sure you follow-up on your letters of recommendation and transcript requests. You should try to finish all college applications before Christmas break.
Step 7 Plan to take and study for the SAT and/or ACT. Make sure you have your scores sent directly to the colleges you are applying to. SBS school code is 470-489.
Step 8 Students planning to participate in a sport at a four year college must submit an NCAA application for clearance the fall or your senior year. You must apply online at http://www.collegesportsscholarships.com/ncaaclearinghouse.htm. SBS school code is 470-489. Make sure you print out the transcript request form and turn it into the College Counselor.
Step 9 Search and apply for scholarships. Do your research on the internet and use the StoneBridge scholarship list available in the monthly College Newsletter and the SBS website to apply for scholarships. This should be done throughout the school year. Be sure to inform the College Counselor of any scholarship money you receive.
Step 10 Fill out & submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This is required for all students who plan to attend college and is used for federal and state student grants, work study, loans. You can do this online at www.fafsa.ed.gov as early as January 1 of the year you plan to attend college.
Step 11 Submit your request form for the Mid-year Grade Report to the College Counselor. Many colleges require that your mid-year grades be sent by the counselor. Please check with each college to see if this is required. Use the gold form referred to in Step 4.
Step 12 Each admission decision letter should be read carefully and you should take note of all reply deadlines. Let the College Counselor know about your acceptances.
Step 13 Submit your final transcript request form to the College Counselor. All colleges require that your final grades be sent at the end of your senior year. As soon as you know where you plan to attend, complete and turn in your final transcript request. Use the gold form referred to in Step 4.
