StoneBridge School Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team and Athletic Program

Sweet. One word that describes the 68-50 championship win by the Lady Cavaliers varsity basketball team against Carlisle School on March 7, 2009. Notwithstanding a few tense moments of tight competition in both the semi- and final games, the Cavaliers completed their successful season with a 25-game winning streak to finish at 33-4. The Lady Cavaliers also took home the Metro Conference Regular Season and the Tournament trophies.

Three players on the team each achieved the 1,000 points milestones for their high school careers:  Ashlea Foster, a senior; Sarah Tabb, a senior; and Caitlyn Unsworth, a sophomore.  In addition, Sarah Tabb received a four-year scholarship to play basketball at Radford University, an NCAA Division I level school. Sarah and Caitlyn began playing for StoneBridge as middle school students. Ashlea joined the team as a sophomore.

The whole team, however, deserves the credit for the championship season.  Coach Barry Rowe, along with assistants Butch Fox and Jeff Crowe, laid the foundation for this season's success during the summer. The girls participated in a summer league, then upgraded their regular season schedule to include public school powerhouses Booker T. Washington and Wilson, and Division I private schools Norfolk Collegiate and Bishop Sullivan. Tough losses to those schools helped the Cavaliers dominate the Metro Conference and other private schools around the area and state.

The Lady Cavaliers' championship this year is one more jewel in the StoneBridge crown. In 2007, the Cavaliers won State championships in boys’ basketball and in girls' swimming. In 2000, Chris Lyons became the first StoneBridge student to capture a state title in track.

Cal Woolard, Athletic Director since 2000, credits the school's philosophy of building character through athletics for the success of StoneBridge School on the court and in the classroom.  "Academics come first for all our athletes," said Woolard. "Our students are just as disciplined in their studies as they are in their sport. Their high grade point averages prove it."

Indeed, StoneBridge School's philosophy of building the character of Christ develops not only physical discipline, but other qualities such as loyalty, perseverance, and humility; commitment; an active relationship with Christ; knowledge of God's Word; and application of the Biblical principles through vision, goal-setting, faith, and the power of the tongue. These ideals serve students well in all areas of life.
