During the week of January 3-6, StoneBridge honored our beloved Coach Cal Woolard, as we celebrated his 75th birthday and 20th year of service at SBS. “Coach Cal” has served as a coach, Athletic Director, PE teacher, facilities manager, bus driver, and electrical safety expert. Most of all, Coach Cal is a loyal friend and much loved by StoneBridge students, parents, teachers, and staff.
Many SBS students and alumni remember Coach Cal as a mentor, someone they can rely on for advice and counsel, encouragement, and support. Alumna and Assistant Athletic Director Julia Overton stated, “Coach Cal is the reason SBS athletics has such a successful record. He does it all, from Junior Leagues all the way up to varsity sports, and no one could ever do it as well as he does. His motto is to build athletes from the ground up, developing mental and physical skill, and most importantly, he instills a love and passion for the game. It is evident that he is loved so deeply just by the amount of cheers and hugs that greet him anytime he enters a room. Coach Cal is a legend at StoneBridge School.”
On Coach Cal’s birthday, the entire school gathered in the gymnasium for a surprise birthday party. At the Homecoming basketball game on January 6, he was honored with a video tribute from students and alumni. “I truly appreciate what everyone did and I was totally surprised both times. It was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me. I wish I could give everyone who participated a hug and a kiss,” Coach Cal said. Mrs. Kathy Rader added, “To many of us, Coach Cal has been a tireless advocate and promoter of StoneBridge, a loyal defender of the school, and someone who has always labored to maintain the excellence and quality of our school year after year. Whenever I have been discouraged, Coach Cal has always encouraged me, inspired me, expressed his confidence in me, and reminded me why we both love this school and love students. Above all, Coach Cal is a disciple of Jesus, and Cal freely points to Jesus as a faithful friend, a wonderful counselor, the one who always knows your needs and hears your prayers.”
